CRICKET!

About The Club

UWLCC may be a small team, but we've certainly got BIG plans for this year. We pride ourselves on our ability to develop all players, whether you've played at county level for years, or have never even picked up a cricket ball before.

Unlike many other teams, we take complete novices and give them the opportunity to play in competitive fixtures (and we'll teach the rules- they're not that difficult- we swear!).

During the winter terms we train indoors twice a week, and also play various friendlies and in BUCS indoor competitions which are always fast paced and great fun. Our season begins proper in the summer term, and we take that training outdoors and play matches in the BUCS Midlands League against teams like Oxford, Cambridge and Notts.

But it's not all cricket, we have an exciting social calender too. With POP! Circling, the Cricket Ball with the men in the Autumn Term, movie nights, meals out (at a ridiculously cheap price with our sponsors!), and not forgetting a tour ALL planned for this year, what else could you possibly want?

So pop along and see us at Sports Fair during Freshers, and come to one of our taster sessions. You'll never know unless you try it out!

A Brief History of Women's Cricket

So you may have been indoctrinated into thinking that cricket is and always has been a man's sport... To clear up this myth(!), here are some facts about the ladies' game:
• The first recorded female county match was in 1811 (Surrey v Hampshire)
• The first ladies' test match occurred in 1934
• And the first world cup took place in 1973 – two years before the men's!

A further gem is the invention of the round arm bowling technique by Christina Willes in 1807 – though banned for some 21 years, the MCC's ruling has given way for one of the best bowlers of all time, 'Slinga' Malinga of Sri Lanka.

So women: don't let anyone tell you that cricket is a men's game – it is as much ours as theirs!
